“Critics Circle Award” winning company Independent Ballet Wales present a breathtaking version of one of Wales’ best known stories.

Based on the bestselling novel by Richard Llewellyn, an Oscar winning film and an authentic BBC Wales television series, this outstanding new production features choreography from “Creative Wales Award” winner Darius James and some of the best young dancers in Europe.

“MacMillan Young Composer of the Year” Thomas Hewitt Jones provides an atmospheric and stunning new commissioned score. Thomas worked with the company in 2008 providing the mesmerizing music for “Under Milk Wood”.

Alos The City of Newport Choir will be singing live at selected venues.

And to cap a truly memorable collaborative experience, The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama have worked with the company to produce innovative and vivid sets and costumes.

The Story

 

How Green Was My Valley is set in Wales in the reign of Queen Victoria. It tells the story of the Morgans, a poor but respectable mining family of the South Wales valleys.

The Morgans are miners and the story follows the family trying to survive the highs and lows of working in a coalmine at that time, including the discontent that sowed the seeds that were to become the union movement.

Ivor, the eldest son marries a young girl from the neighboring valley called Bronwen.

Angharad Morgan falls in love with the new preacher, Mr Gruffydd but he rejects her because he feels he is too old and poor and cannot offer her a future.

Angharad instead marries a wealthy coal-owner whom she does not love, and the marriage is an unhappy one.

Ianto Morgan, the firebrand son, marries introverted Marged who, left alone for long days on end while Ianto fights for the union, loses her sanity.

Angharad, returning home alone meets Mr Gruffydd in friendship but gossip at their relationship forces the preacher to leave the valley forever.

Glowyr yw’r Morganiaid ac mae’r stori’n dilyn y teulu’n ceisio goroesi llanw a thrai gweithio mewn pwll glo ar yr adeg honno, gan gynnwys yr anfodlonrwydd a heuwyd a fyddai’n ffrwytho mudiad yr undeb.
Mae Ivor, y mab hynaf, yn priodi merch ifanc o’r enw Bronwen o’r cwm cyfagos.

Mae Angharad Morgan yn syrthio mewn cariad â’r pregethwr newydd, Mr Gruffydd, ond mae’n ei gwrthod hi gan iddo deimlo ei fod yn rhy hen a thlawd ac nad yw’n gallu cynnig dyfodol iddi.

Mae Angharad felly’n priodi perchennog pwll glo cyfoethog nad yw’n ei garu, ac mae’r briodas yn un anhapus.
Mae Ianto Morgan, y penboethyn o fab, yn priodi Marged swil sy’n colli ei meddwl, pan fydd Ianto’n ei gadael ar ei phen ei hun am ddiwrnodau maith tra bo yntau’n ymladd i’r undeb.

Pan ddychwela Angharad adref ar ei phen ei hun, mae’n cyfarfod â Mr Gruffydd mewn cyfeillgarwch ond mae clebran am eu perthynas yn gorfodi’r pregethwr i adael y cwm am byth.

Mae dathliadau ar y gweill ar gyfer priodas Theseus, Dug Athen, a Hippolyta, Brenhines yr Amasoniaid. Daw Egeus gerbron Theseus â’i ferch wrthryfelgar Hermia, sydd mewn cariad â Lysander er bod ei thad yn mynnu y dylai briodi Demetrius. Mae’r Dug yn gorchymyn Hermia i ufuddhau i’w thad neu, yn ôl cyfraith Athen, mae’n rhaid iddi wynebu marwolaeth neu fynd i leiandy.
Yn hytrach, mae Hermia a Lysander yn penderfynu rhedeg ymaith y noson honno. Maent yn cyfaddef eu bwriad i’w cyfaill Helena ac mae hi, sydd mewn cariad â Demetrius ac yn gobeithio ennill ei serch, yn dweud wrtho am y cynllun. Mae’r cariadon ill pedwar yn dianc i’r goedwig y noson honno.
Roedd Bottom y gwehydd a grŵp o grefftwyr Athenaidd yn bwriadu perfformio drama, ‘Trasiedi Pyramus a Thisbe’, i ddathlu priodas y Dug. Maent yn penderfynu ymarfer yn yr un goedwig.
Mae Oberon a Titania, rheolwyr tylwyth teg y goedwig, wedi cweryla gan fod Titania wedi gwrthod ildio ei gwas bach i Oberon. Mae’n gorchymyn i Puck chwilio am blanhigyn hudol y bydd ei sudd, os caiff ei wasgu ar lygaid rhywun sy’n cysgu, yn achosi i rywun syrthio mewn cariad â’r creadur cyntaf a wêl pan fydd yn dihuno.

Mae Oberon yn defnyddio’r sudd ar Titania, ac mae’n syrthio dros ei phen a’i chlustiau mewn cariad â Bottom, sydd wedi’i hudo gan Puck. Mae’n dweud hefyd wrth Puck i ddefnyddio’r sudd ar Demetrius, er mwyn iddo syrthio mewn cariad â Helena efallai ond mae Puck, sy’n cymysgu’r ddau lanc o Athen, yn ei ddefnyddio ar Lysander yn hytrach, sy’n syrthio mewn cariad ar unwaith â Helena…

Yn y pen draw, fodd bynnag, caiff pob swyn ei godi, mae’r cariadon yn hapus yn eu parau a Titania ac Oberon yn ôl gyda’i gilydd. Mae’r tri phâr yn priodi, ac mae cwmni Bottom yn perfformio ei ddrama yn y dathliadau priodasol.
